Curiosities about Costa Rica (Draft 3)

Costa Rica is located in Central America, limited at north with Nicaragua, at south with Panama, Costa Rica has an area of 51100 km. In the east coast limited with Caribbean Sea and in the west coast limited with Pacific Ocean.

You can cross to the Pacific Coast until Caribbean Coast in only one day, because this country is very small, but in this little piece of territory you can find a lot of weathers and different views and landscapes.

 Costa Rica is country with more biodiversity in the world, in fact has 6% of the whole biodiversity of planet. Costa Rica is refuge at more of 10000 species of plants, having between it more of 1000 species of orchids, actually Monteverde is the region with highest density of orchids on the planet. About animals Costa Rica count with 232 species of mammals, 838 species of birds, 183 species of amphibians, 258  species of reptiles and 130  species of freshwater fish. Only the 25% of the whole territory is protected and exist 27 national parks to preserve this nature.

Costa Rica has a more continental sea surface because the ocean area is approximately 589,000 square kilometers, which includes Isla Del Coco which is located about 480 km southwest of the Osa Peninsula on the Pacific coast. This island was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

One of the theories about the origin of name of this country are related with the arrival of Cristobal Colon in September 1502, in his fourth trip to America. Colon was impressed with the beautiful nature of Costa Rica and abundance of gold ornaments of indigenous for this reason he thought in this country would have many riches.

Costa Rica won a special prize by abolish the army in 1948. Nowadays are within a list of 22 oldest democracies in the world, in fact is the most democratic country of all Central America. Costa Rica has the best education system in Latin America and has around five state universities (TEC, UCR, UNA, UNED, and UTN), the best lifespan and social progress also it counts with an excellent health system.

The most practiced sport is soccer, the principal league of soccer has 12 teams, and the teams with more championships obtained are: Deportivo Saprissa with 30 titles, the Liga Deportiva Alajuelense with 29 titles, the Club Sport Herediano with 23 titles, and Club Liberty Sport with 6 titles.
